Lakes Descriptions in the
Shackleford Creek Area

S & E Outfitters primarily uses the Shackleford Trailhead, one of the major trailheads to the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Located in the Klamath National Forest out of Fort Jones, California. This trailhead has moderately difficult trips to some of the most picturesque trails and marvelous lakes.

Fishing the Creek

All of Shackleford Creek is a experience of joy for the fisherman who enjoy popping the wily fish from a creek.

Calf Lake

A spur trail just before Log lake will climb up to Calf Lake. At 7,000 feet high this 3 acre, 30 foot deep lake can really produce the fish. The trail turns right near Reynolds Cabin and follows the creek to the lake stocked with Eastern brook trout.

Log Lake

The first lake, 3 miles (about an hour) from the trailhead, and at an elevation of 5,400 ft, is appropriately named Log Lake. This small, 1 acre, 15 foot deep lake is shallow and full of logs but the rewards are great. Don’t let the looks fool you. The brookies are nice size and a challenge to catch. Log Lake is not for the inexperienced fisherman.

Campbell Lake

Past Log Lake across a large meadow and over the hill is one of the larger lakes in this drainage, Campbell Lake. About 5 ½ miles from the trail head, it takes about 3 hours to reach this 5,800 foot elevation. Campbell Lake is 33 acres, 30 feet deep and will produce Eastern brook, rainbow and brown trout for those who fish this wilderness lake.

Cliff Lake

Further on is Cliff Lake, the biggest of the Shackleford Trailhead lakes. It occupies 52 acres, is 175 feet deep, with an elevation of 6,000 feet. The big outdoors and rugged look of this big beautiful lake is breath taking! Fishing is good here!

Summit Lake

From Cliff Lake climbing on up and over the next ridge reveals Summit Lake. Elevation 6,050 feet, this serene lake guards the magnificent mountain tops. This 5 acre, 15 foot deep lake has a large Eastern brook trout population. The shallow Summit Meadow Lake just yards above the lake also has fish.

Climbing to the west above Summit Lake will connect you to the Pacific Crest Trail and many other Marble Mountain lakes. On the PCT, heading south will connect you to Kidder drainage with Kidder Lakes & Shelley Meadows. Heading north will lead to many different drainages and many lakes including Little Elk, Sky High, and Frying pan lakes.

Shackleford Loop Trip

Going out the north end of Summit Lake will make a loop trip back to the Shackleford trail, just above Log Lake.S & E Outfitters can offer you offers such a wealth of wonderful experiences from the Skackleford Trailhead.
